The Long-Fin Neon Tetra is a captivating variation of the classic Neon Tetra, distinguished by its elegant, elongated fins and vibrant coloration. Native to the blackwater streams and tributaries of the Amazon Basin, these fish are a favorite among aquarists for their dazzling appearance and peaceful demeanor.

The Long-Fin Neon Tetra features the iconic iridescent blue stripe and red lower half characteristic of its species. Its unique, flowing fins add an extra touch of grace to its movements. These fish are schooling by nature and should be kept in groups of at least six to promote social interaction and reduce stress. They are active swimmers and prefer the middle levels of the aquarium.

A minimum tank size of 10 gallons is suitable for a small school of Long-Fin Neon Tetras. The tank should replicate their natural environment with a dark substrate, driftwood, and plenty of aquatic plants such as java moss and Amazon swords. Subdued lighting enhances their vibrant colors and mimics their native habitat. Water conditions should be stable, with a pH of 6.0-7.0, a temperature range of 72-78°F, and low to moderate water hardness (1-10 dGH).

Long-Fin Neon Tetras are omnivorous and require a balanced diet for optimal health. Feed them a variety of high-quality flakes or micro pellets, supplemented with live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. A diverse diet will keep them vibrant and active.

These fish are relatively hardy but sensitive to water quality. Weekly water changes of 25-30% are essential to maintain optimal conditions. Avoid sudden changes in water parameters, as they can stress the fish. A gentle filtration system is recommended to avoid damaging their delicate fins.

Long-Fin Neon Tetras are excellent additions to community aquariums. Their peaceful nature allows them to coexist with other small, non-aggressive species such as rasboras, Corydoras catfish, and dwarf gouramis. Avoid housing them with larger or aggressive fish, as their elongated fins may become targets for fin-nipping.

Breeding Long-Fin Neon Tetras is challenging but achievable with proper care. Use a separate breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic water (pH ~6.5) and a temperature around 78°F. Dim lighting and fine-leaved plants or spawning mops encourage egg-laying. Once eggs are laid, remove the parents to prevent them from eating the eggs. The fry will hatch in 24-36 hours and become free-swimming within a few days. Start feeding them infusoria or finely crushed fry food.
