The Iridescent Shark is a large and striking species known for its shimmering silvery body and peaceful nature. Despite its name, it is not a true shark, but rather a species of freshwater catfish that can grow to impressive sizes in the right conditions. Native to Southeast Asia, it is found in rivers and lakes where it thrives in slow-moving waters with rich food sources.

This species is omnivorous, feeding on a wide range of foods in the wild, including plants, small fish, and crustaceans. In captivity, it will thrive on high-quality pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and fish fillets. Ensuring a varied diet is crucial to maintaining its health and enhancing its iridescent glow.

Iridescent Sharks require very large aquariums due to their size, and a minimum tank size of 300 gallons (1135 liters) is essential. As they grow, they need even larger spaces, as they can reach lengths of up to 3-4 feet (90-120 cm). A spacious tank with plenty of swimming room and hiding spaces will keep them healthy and stress-free. A large tank is especially important since these fish are known to be active swimmers and need plenty of space to move around.

The ideal water conditions for the Iridescent Shark include a pH range of 6.5 to 7.5, with a specific gravity of 1.005 - 1.015. The water hardness should range from 6-15 dGH to replicate the soft to slightly hard freshwater environment of their natural habitat. A temperature range of 75-82°F (24-28°C) is optimal, and regular water changes are important to maintain stable water quality.

While generally peaceful, the Iridescent Shark may become territorial as it matures, particularly with other large fish. To avoid conflicts, it is best to house them with other large, non-aggressive fish. Smaller fish may become prey if the Iridescent Shark feels threatened or hungry.

These fish can live for 15-20 years, making them a long-term commitment for aquarists. Given their size and care requirements, Iridescent Sharks are best suited for experienced aquarium keepers with the resources to provide them with the space and care they need. Regular water quality testing, a varied diet, and proper tank maintenance are key to ensuring their longevity and well-being.
