How To Care For Clownfish

Clownfish are brightly colored fish that can bring personality and a unique communication style to any aquarium. They are a favorite of many beginners and can be one of the first fish purchased when starting an aquarium hobby. Despite their reputation for being easy to care for, they can be prone to disease and require a specific tank setup that is safe for them.

There are at least thirty species of Clownfish, however two of them (Amphiprion ocellaris and Amphiprion percula, or True Percula Clownfish) are the most common and popular. These are the types of clownfish most commonly seen in pet stores and online. They cost around $15 and can live for 6 years.

A Clownfish's tank should be large enough to provide adequate swimming space and hiding spots. A 20-30 gallon (75.7-113.6 L) tank is recommended. Choosing a larger tank will reduce the need for frequent water changes and help maintain healthy oxygen levels in the habitat.

In the aquarium, Clownfish will find comfort in hiding spots such as coral, rocks, or anemones, but they are also active fish that will sometimes dart out to defend their territory or capture food. Pet parents may decorate their clownfish's habitat with live plants or decorative decorations, but these should be well-secured to prevent the plant from falling and injuring the fish.

Performing regular 10% to 15% water changes bi-weekly is important for ensuring the water quality remains stable. Frequent water changes remove excess food and waste from the habitat, preventing algae growth and nitrite/nitrate sickness. Pet parents can also add a protein skimmer to their tank to reduce the amount of organic waste and keep dissolved oxygen levels high.
