How to Care Angelfish

Angelfish are hardy fish and do well in most aquarium conditions. However, it is important to keep water quality optimal by doing routine water changes and cleaning the tank. This will eliminate harmful bacteria and reduce algae growth. It is also recommended to quarantine any new fish before introducing them to the aquarium to prevent spreading diseases.

They are omnivores and should be fed a balanced diet of protein-rich foods and plant matter to promote health and vibrant colors. A good rule of thumb is to feed them small amounts of food multiple times per day rather than one large meal. This will help them avoid overeating and prevent obesity that can lead to health problems.

Because of their long, slender fins, they need an aquarium that is taller than other fish species. A tank of 55 gallons or more is ideal when they are fully grown. The water should be slightly acidic, with a soft substrate and plenty of hiding places. Water flow should be gentle and plants are encouraged, especially broad-leafed varieties like Amazon sword plants (Echinodorus spp). Java moss and water sprite Ceratopteris spp are also good choices.

A breeding pair of angelfish is best kept in a separate breeding tank until they lay their eggs and the male fertilizes them. They will need a slanted surface for laying and a lower-flow sponge filter to protect the eggs and newborn babies from being eaten by other fish. After about six weeks, the fry can be moved to a community tank with other fish.
