The African Brass Tetra is a small, vibrant species that is an excellent choice for a community aquarium. With its sleek, elongated body and eye-catching golden or brass coloration, it brings a burst of color to the tank. Native to West and Central Africa, these fish are found in slow-moving rivers, streams, and ponds with plenty of vegetation and clear water. In captivity, they thrive in similar conditions, preferring slightly acidic to neutral water with a temperature range of 74-82°F (23-28°C).

Their diet is omnivorous, and they will readily accept high-quality dry foods such as pellets and flakes, as well as live or frozen options like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Their active and peaceful nature makes them ideal for a community tank with other non-aggressive species. They typically do well in schools of at least six, which helps them feel secure and reduces stress.

Though they are relatively easy to care for, providing plenty of swimming space, plants, and hiding spots will keep them happy. The African Brass Tetra appreciates a well-planted tank with gentle water movement to simulate its natural habitat. It's essential to maintain good water quality by performing regular water changes to prevent the buildup of toxins.

These fish are not particularly demanding but should be housed in aquariums with stable water conditions. As with all tetras, they can be sensitive to drastic changes in temperature and water chemistry, so it’s important to acclimate them carefully and keep a consistent routine.

African Brass Tetras are best kept with other peaceful species, such as small livebearers, barbs, or other tetras. Larger or more aggressive species may stress them out. They can be bred in the aquarium, though it’s more challenging compared to other tetra species. To encourage breeding, ensure they are well-fed and the water parameters are ideal.
