The Black Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) is a unique and striking variety of the popular Oscar fish, distinguished by its dark, almost black coloration. This color morph is a result of selective breeding and can vary in intensity, ranging from deep charcoal to a rich, dark brown. While the Black Oscar shares many characteristics with other Oscar variants, its dark coloration makes it stand out in any aquarium, adding a dramatic and bold contrast to its surroundings.

Typically growing to 12 to 14 inches (30 to 35 cm) in length, the Black Oscar has a robust and oval-shaped body, equipped with powerful jaws and a large head. The dark body is often accented with lighter or orange spots or markings, which can create an interesting contrast. These markings may vary from fish to fish, and in some cases, they may become more prominent as the fish matures. Despite its dark appearance, the Black Oscar is known for its engaging and dynamic behavior.

It is generally not recommended to keep small or delicate species with Oscars, as they may become stressed or even eaten. However, the Black Oscar can coexist peacefully with other large, non-aggressive fish, such as plecos and catfish, provided there is enough space and hiding spots.

The Black Oscar prefers water conditions that are slightly acidic to neutral, with a temperature range of 75°F to 80°F (24°C to 27°C) and a pH level between 6.5 and 7.5. Oscars are hardy fish, but they require clean, well-filtered water due to their large size and high waste production. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential for their long-term health.

As omnivores, Black Oscars have a broad diet that includes pellets, flakes, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, earthworms, and small fish. Their hearty appetites and love of food make them easy to feed, but care should be taken to avoid overfeeding, as this can lead to obesity or water quality issues.

Black Oscars are highly intelligent and can recognize their owners, often becoming interactive with them. They may learn to eat from their owner’s hand, follow movements around the tank, or even engage in other forms of interaction. Their inquisitive nature and active swimming behavior make them a captivating fish to observe in the aquarium.

With proper care, including regular water changes, stable water conditions, and a balanced diet, the Black Oscar can live for 10 to 15 years or more in captivity.
